To say the Mount Beauty Fly-away 11-13 March was a success would be a chronic understatement: it was nothing short of brilliant! The weather was the best we could have hoped for with little to worry about on both the trip there and back with, get this, tailwinds in both directions! No-one had any trouble getting into or out of what can be a tricky airport, and the weekend itself was loaded with good times, good food and, yes, some good wine. In all, 19 people in nine aeroplanes joined the party with club member Shane Stone hooking up with us for the Saturday and Saturday night. After arrival we made our way by coach up the twisty mountain road to Falls Creek and lunch at Huskis Cafe. Lunch was walked off on the short path to the iconic Wallace Hut, a gentle stroll among dead snow gums that took on a very ethereal quality. On the Sunday we toured around the region with stops at Yackandandah, Beechworth, Pennyweight Winery, Gapsted Winery and the top of Tawonga Gap. If you didn’t go and haven’t been, you need to put Mount Beauty on your agenda.

Queens Birthday Weekend Fly-away Report
/in News /by SteveHitchenLFC members staged a successful and fun weekend fly-away to Dubbo on 10-12 June, with 14 people and six aeroplanes making the 3.5+ hour trip to the city in the NSW Western Plains. We spent a day exploring the best Dubbo had to offer then braved the 20-knot headwinds and slowly darkening weather for the trip home, but everyone got back applauding the weekend and the effort put in by SQNLDR Dave Marty in organising. Highlights of the trip were:
We will organise another weekend away soon. Destination: unknown.
African Wild Dogs take a break from boredom to leap around nipping and yipping at each other.
Meandering zebras crossing their grassy paddock.
Warren and Delia prepare AG5B WDJ before heading back to Coldstream.
Sylvia and Barry with Jabiru 5122 on departure day.
One of only 400 Sumatran tigers left in the world.
Russ and Julie in front of their trusty steed Pioneer 4944.
Przewalskis horses at play.
Phil gets Archer DDM ready for the trip home.
A very happy hour (OK, it was two hours). L-R: Pitch, Phil, Bob, Julie, Bill, Barry, Dave, Warren and a couch full of ladies.
Sunday night happy hour. L-R: Warren, Vicki, Debbie and Sylvia.
A very funky gibbon with an itchy foot.
Elephants loll around the display pen.
A Cheetah on alert.
See you back home! Pitch and Phil beat everyone out of Dubbo on the Monday morning.

Echuca Cup Day Trip
/in News /by SteveHitchenAfter the Hobart trip was torpedoed by bad weather, LFC flew to King Island on the Saturday of Melbourne Cup Weekend, then backed it up with lunch trips to Milawa on Monday and Echuca on Tuesday. The Echuca trip gathered five planes and 12 people, who made the trip after deciding Echuca was the safest and most logical destination, given that another low was moving in over the west of the state. Below are Sonya’s pics of the day.
Pioneer 4944 with Russ and Laura on board turn to line-up on 35 ECH.
Dave, Bob, Erika, Doug, Gale and Steve ready for lunch at the Beechworth Bakery in Echuca.
Sqn Ldr Dave Marty on the wing on his chariot Bonanza BIM.
Bonanza BIM, Cardinal DZP and Pioneer 4944 parked at ECH.
The paddocks are looking relatively green in the Murray country. Taken from RCR as it descends to circuit height ECH.
RCR with Graeme Kaufman at the stick makes its way out of the Kilmore Gap.
Doug and Carmel taxi into Echuca in Pipistrel 8657.
Steve, Doug, Laura and Gale under an old Murray River gum.
Gale, Laura and Doug saunter along the old port area at Echuca.
RCR turns at Yan Yean to track for 36R final at LIL.
King Island
/in News /by SteveHitchenOur Melbourne Cup weekend fly-away to Hobart ended up being a day trip to King Island due to some hideous weather forecast that would have trapped us in Wynyard for a couple of days. The upside was that the day for crossing to King Island could not have been better! Nineteen people in eight planes had almost perfect conditions for the trip and we had a good feed and got some cheese whilst we were down there. Thanks to Dave Marty for all his work on this. It’s a pity so much of it had to be unstitched at the last minute. Anyway, enjoy Sonya’s pics from the day below.
Russ Grosvenor and David Coillins secure Pioneer 4944 at King Island.
Aireys Inlet from Archer RCR.
Pitch and Hitch about to board RCR for the flight back over Bass Strait.
Dave and Vicki Marty with their Bonanza BIM getting ready to go home.
LFC members mulling around outside the King Island cheese factory.
Cheese!

Cardinal DZP parked with Archers ZZW and RCR at King Island.
Barry Mock’s Jabiru 5122 and Doug and Carmel Fraser’s Pipistrel 8657 on the hard stand.
A couple of pioneers: Steve Daniel’s Pioneer 300 parked next to one of aviation’s great pioneering aeroplanes: a DC3.
